Wage Bargaining Does Not Produce Necessary Improvements

On July 28, the negotiating committees of UE Local 1008 - Stanley, Northrop and SPS -- met with the Employers in an attempt to bring the contract negotiations to a close. While the companies made some significant movement on the General Clerk I's pay in California, they refused to make any movement towards restoring the personal days that were taken away. The Union said repeatedly that workers needed a substantial wage increase, personal days and improvements in the 401(k). The Company's refusal to move on the members' key issue led the negotiating committees to vote to recommend rejection of the company's offer. The contract ratification will be held later this week, and the Union's leaders are urging members to vote no.

The company offered to continue bargaining with a federal mediator present. The Union said it will continue its efforts to bring bargaining to a successful close.
